Fly Fishing the North Mills River Needs Help

Sat, 07/24/2010 - 09:59 -- jmaslar

One of North Carolina’s finest trout streams can finally be preserved and kept in public trust. Yes, the issues of private ownership and ugly development will vanish if we act now! In order to secure the future for delayed harvest management, Trout Unlimited has teamed up with Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy to ensure that the north Mills remains open.

TU has the opportunity to help conserve the Big Creek Lodge by purchasing the property and re-selling it to the Forest Service in 2012. The Big Creek Lodge property is an 80 acre in-holding in the Pisgah National Forest on the North Mills River; it holds key access to upper sections of the river for both angling and stocking

Previous owners have proposed a variety of development schemes that would dramatically impact the river's health and limit public access for fishing. The future of the delayed harvest fisheries management for the entire section would also be put at risk if the property were developed.

TU needs to raise $30,000 by August 30th in order to complete this purchase, and for that, TU needs your help. You can help by making a tax free contribution. Send tax deductible checks to:
