Getting Started Fly Fishing With Nymphs

Tue, 12/11/2012 - 22:43 -- smaslar

We recently had a question as to how to get started fly fishing with nymphs. Here is a summary of some recommendations as to what you should do as you begin using nymphs on the trout stream.

Check out our nymph starter collection of flies. This is a good package to get started with. These nymphs occur in most of the eastern US. Note that information on how to fish each of the nymphs is included in their individual descriptions in our online store in the Flies section. Also, note that our flies specifically imitate actual insect species, rather than just being generic patterns that look kindof buggy. If you learn how to fish the specific patterns to properly mimic the actual insects, you will catch more trout.

As far as what other nymphs to choose to fish with, you will simply need to look at a hatch chart (keep checking back, as we periodically add charts, or let us know which stream you need a chart for, and we might be able to add it) for the types of insects that live in the stream you are interested in fishing. From there, visit the Flies section of our online store, to purchase and read about the corresponding nymph patterns, and how to fish them.

See our ebook in pdf form on nymphing. Note that you can also find this ebook in Amazon Kindle format.

Also, here are some of our classes on nymph fishing, matching the hatch, etc
