Cyber Guide Series

We here at the University recommend that you use a professional guide especially when you are on a stream for the first time.  We have listed several good guides in our Guides and Outfitters Links for your use.  There are howerer, times where the streams may be too small, or they may be in a state park or you may not be able to afford a professional guide.  For these occasions, we are developing the Cyber Guide Series of videos.

Contributor Tom Rosenbauer

Tom Rosenbauer has been a fly fisher for over 35 years and was a commercial fly tier by age 14. For 27 years he has been with the Orvis Company, where he is now marketing director for Orvis Rod and Tackle. He has ten fly fishing books in print, including The Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide, Reading Trout Streams, Casting Illusions, Fly-Fishing in America, Approach and Presentation, Trout Foods and Their Imitations, Nymphing Techniques, Leaders, Knots, and Tippets, The Orvis Guide to Dry-Fly Techniques, and The Orvis Fly-Tying Guide, which won a 2001 National Outdoor Book Award.

Founder's Philosophy

This website was founded for the purpose of providing knowledge to the beginner trout fisherman as well as the more experienced.  When we decided to start fishing in the Southeast, we had no knowledge whatsoever.  We did not know what species live in the area, where to find them, their habits or even what equipment to use. Our education progressed from, Gatlinburg Tennessee stocked trout, to the Smoky Mountains National Park  for stocked trout and finally to the wild trout not only in the parks, but throughout the Southeast.
