Fly Fishing with Sculpins

Wed, 01/01/2014 - 16:46 -- jmaslar

In cold water streams, sculpins are bottom feeding fish that are difficult to see. There are about 300 species of them, the largest of which grow to about two feet long. Most of them are found in shallow sea waters and others, such as the miller’s-thumb (Cottus gobio), inhabit freshwater. Among the freshwater sculpins, the Cottus genus is by far the most common and is found in the majority of the trout streams in the USA. They generally are a mottled brown in color and grow to about four inches long.

More Great Flies Now Available

Wed, 11/06/2013 - 16:21 -- jmaslar

About a year ago, we experimented with making Perfect Flies available for sale on TroutProStore. We started with a select number of flies to imitate the aquatic insects found primarily in the Eastern and Mid Western streams. However, the flies have been received so entheustically and the sales have been so good, that we decided to expand our fly selection not only to the Eastern USA but also to include many if not most of the more common flies found in the Western USA streams.

How to Fly Fish a Hatch

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 10:20 -- jmaslar

There is a great deal of misconception regarding the hatching of aquatic insects. For example the hatch often referred to in hatch charts is actually when the flies emerge into adults. The actual hatch has already occurred prior to that time. However, for purposes of this article, we will use the standard term for hatch meaning when the flies emerge. It should be noted that insects spend most of their lives as nymphs, pupae or larva. Therefore the trout have far greater opportunity to eat them prior to their emerging. After they emerge as adults, they soon fly away.

Perfect Fly Brown Sculpin

Mon, 09/16/2013 - 11:28 -- jmaslar

Not only does the appearance of the "Perfect Fly" Brown Sculpin closely resemble the sculpin, but its movements and and its behavior also closely resemble that of the actual sculpin. After several tests, we decided to use the eyes but not weight the fly. If the fly had added weight it would not work nearly as well as it does without weight in shallow water.

Fly Fishing the Light Cahill Nymph

Fri, 05/03/2013 - 11:31 -- jmaslar

Light Cahills will be hatching through the end of June. The nymphs are clinger nymphs that spend most of their life cling to the underside of rocks or between the cracks on the bottom of the runs and riffles of the streams. These nymphs need the fast highly oxygenated water to exist and that is why their bodies are made to cling on the bottom of rocks.
