Trico Female Dun

Perfect Fly Dun:

The diminutive Trico duns hatch in large numbers and often the spinners form a cloud early in the morning on the hot summer days. It is sometimes hard to get your fly noticed and selected by a feeding trout simply because there is such an abundance of them.

 Perfect Fly Dun Presentation:

After you observe the trout feeding on the duns, try to wade below the rising trout and get as close as you can without risking spooking the fish. Since the fly is so tiny, it will be to your advantage to get close, enabling you to see the fly.

In the case of a deep pool where you can not get below the trout, use a down stream or down and across presentation. By nature, this type of cast must be long, and therefore it will be more difficult to see the fly.

Should the trout not take the female dun or the male dun, switch to the other sex.  Although it may seem like this would not make a difference, some anglers are dedicated to trying this old trick. We at Trout University stock both sexes so you can do your own thing.
