The March Brown also known as the Western March Brown is a clinger that is the first mayfly to hatch in many western trout streams. They inhibit the fast waters of riffles and runs of the streams. However, on occasions they can be found in the slower to moderately moving water. Their hatches are usually not bountiful and may be short and dispersed. The duns hatch sporadically for a few hours and are seldom concentrated.

On most of the western streams, the duns are the most important stage to imitate. They remain on the surface for a few seconds waiting for their wings to dry before flying away.On the colder days they will sometimes drift before flying away.

Presentation:

The Western March Brown mayflies for the most part are found in faster pocket water.

In fast moving rough water, present the Western March Brown dun imitation using an upstream presentation along the seams of pocket water and the edges of the runs. The duns will not be concentrated, so from observing the rises, it may be difficult to determine where the trout are feeding. In this case, try to make a lot of short slightly up and across casts while trying to keep the fly in the most productive water which will again, will be the current seams.

It is best to use an 8 foot long leader with two feet of 4X tippet. When fishing in moderately flowing water or smooth flowing water you may switch to a down and across stream presentation. This may call for a longer leader combined with a smaller tippet size.
