Fly Fishing the Hendrickson Duns

Tue, 12/08/2009 - 14:12 -- jmaslar

General Description of Dun:

First of all, it is important to understand that there is a definite difference between the male and the female duns. The male for example is the smaller and slimmer of the two. The color of his abdomen and thorax is much darker and usually had a reddish tint. The female, on the other hand, has a cream color abdomen with a slight red or sometimes a dark green tint. The male has big red eyes although that may not be noticeable to the hungry trout. My what big pretty red eyes you have, slurp!

Presentation:
The duns can be found with the hatching in the mid afternoon in smooth mild flowing water such as is found in pools, shallow pocket water and the ends of runs. In these waters, an up stream presentation will work but a down and across presentation usually will prove to be more effective. Position yourself where you see the trout rising to take the duns, being careful not to spook them since the water is smoother and flowing moderately.

You may see the trout being very aggressive as they take the duns because they have little time. The hatch does not usually last over a long period of time.
