Trout Fishing Trip - Upper Linville River North Carolina

Sat, 01/02/2010 - 15:52 -- smaslar

We started the year off right again this New Year's by going fishing on the Upper Linville River in North Carolina above the Linville Falls, up to the campground.  It was a beautiful day to be in the woods, with 6 inches of residual snow.  The fishing started out hot, with Dan catching three trout right away.  A little later in the morning, he landed a 24" long Rainbow Trout that probably pushed 3 lbs.  Later in the afternoon, the fishing slowed considerably.

Freestone Creeks, Spring Creeks and Tailwaters

Tue, 12/15/2009 - 16:27 -- jmaslar

I was asked the other day “What is a freestone creek” and it occurred to me that there might be some anglers who are not acquainted with the terms that describe the different types of streams. There are three main types of streams that anglers often refer to; and they are freestone creeks, spring creeks and tailwaters. So I have a brief explanation here and a much broader explanation in Troutu Class 1025 to further the understanding.

Wilson Creek Delayed Harvest Yields Rainbow

Tue, 11/17/2009 - 16:44 -- jmaslar

A portion of the Wilson CreeK near the town of Mortimer NC, was recently made a delayed harvest stream.  A friend of mine Johnny Dollar caught this HOG on the DH portion of the Wilson recently.  John caught her on a #18 Hetero-Genius nymph tied by Dave Hise of Casters of Hickory on a 9ft, 5X Flurocarbon leader. He used his rod of choice, a 9ft Orvis T3 5wt and reel was an Abel TR2 loaded with Rio Gold Line. Water was very clear and slightly lower than usual.

November Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains Park

Tue, 11/10/2009 - 14:52 -- jmaslar

It is raining here in Charlotte, NC today with the accumulation of rain to be 2 inches or more, so I sit at my computer trying to reminisce about the good times in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In particular, I remember about fishing in the Walker Camp Prong and the Oconaluftee near Gatlinburg in early November while the ladies did some Christmas shopping.

Trout Fishing in South Carolina Tailwaters

Sat, 09/12/2009 - 17:05 -- jmaslar

Trout fishing in the South Carolina mountains is alive, and very well indeed, in the  WHITEWATER RIVER, EASTATOE RIVER, and the CHATTOOGA RIVER, but did you know that you can trout fish in the LOWER SALUDA RIVER which is over 100 miles from the mountains.  The Lower Saluda is the tailrace from Lake Murray managed by the S.C. Electric & Gas Company.  You can fish as far south as the Riverbanks Zoo one of the most popular zoos in the nation.

Codorus Creek is a small, tailwater trout stream

On July 14 , we did the  Trout Fishing in Pennsylvania blog and we have been blogging about tailwater trout streams.  In line with that information, we have just learned about a very important tailwater stream in Pennsylvania called Codorus Creek. The West Branch of the Codorus Creek is a small, tailwater trout stream located in the southwestern part of York County, in south-central Pennsylvania. It is fed by a dam constructed in the 1970's to serve the cold water needs of a local paper mill.
