Fly Fishing Space

Thu, 11/04/2010 - 09:50 -- jmaslar

Here in Charlotte, we are having a rainy, cool day and the cold is permeating my bones, I do not feel inclined to go anywhere, so I have some thoughts about fishing courtesy as it relates to space afforded to other anglers. When we are approaching a stream about to start trout fishing here are some things to consider.

South Holston River Fly Fishing Report

Fri, 10/22/2010 - 09:14 -- jmaslar

The big browns are in prespawn mode on the South Holston River, feeding heavily during small windows throughout the day. While good numbers of fish can be caught almost anywhere on the South Holston, River, our biggest fish are being caught on low water floats in the middle or lower sections of the SoHo.

Fabulous dry fly fishing is starting around 3 PMeveryday. Sulfurs, craneflies, blue duns, blue winged olives, and midges are coming off in hordes and the fish are readily rising. It is perhaps the best dry fly activity we have seen all year.

Fall Fly Fishing with the Blue Winged Olive

Mon, 10/11/2010 - 09:27 -- jmaslar

In the fall, the tourist activity slows down considerably including the onlookers, and those in water crafts as well as the tubers. This presents an opportunity to fish from popular sight seeing pullovers along the road or in otherwise populated tourist destinations. Also, the football season will lure away some of the less dedicated fly fishermen, no offence intended.

The Big, Bad Missouri

Wed, 09/22/2010 - 15:34 -- jmaslar

The Missouri River is the longest river in the USA draining over one sixth of the nation's area. It starts with the confluence of the Jefferson, the Madison and the Gallatin Rivers at Three Forks, Montana. It is also a tributary of the Mississippi River contributing about 45% of the Mississippi's water. The claim is that the Missouri River contains 4,000 trout (wild trout that is) per mile. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set off on an expedition up the Missouri from Wood River, Ill. on May 14, 1804.
