Terrestrial insects by definition are insects that are born or living on land rather than in the sea or the air. The only time that terrestrial insects get into the water is by accidentally falling or accidentally landing or by being washed into the water. Black flies good a readily available source of food for trout especially after a heavy rain.. A good place to start is in the current seam where a small feeder stream meets a larger stream. There will be flies carried along in the current especially after a heavy rain. Also, a good place to start with the flies is near a pasture or other fields.

Presentation:

The best approach is to fish parallel to and close to the banks. Fish underneath overhanging branches, taking care to not spook the trout. Do try to give the fly some action from time to time to keep it lively. An up and across presentation is recommended for most situations. Make numerous short upstream casts as you work your way up the stream. You will notice that the trout hit the fly as it lands as they seem to be watching it’s flight.
