Aside from obvious safety concerns, such as dressing for the elements, being sure your vehicle is in good working order, making sure you don't get stuck when bad weather comes in, taking a friend fishing with you, and not falling in, here are 5 tips for winter fly fishing.

1.  Fish deliberately.  The fish are moving slowly, and as such, a slower, more deliberate approach is necessary.  Don't give up after the first cast to a promising looking spot.

  1. Cut the fly off of the leader and carefully store it where it can get air such as a fly-drying patch.
  2. Clean the fly line with a line cleaner or a mild soap and then wipe it dry with a soft cloth or towel. In normal use, the line will accumulate dirt or algae on the surface. A fly line will float and cast better if it has been cleaned. After cleaning, a lubricant can be applied if you so desire.

# 1 Always use the smallest possible sized indicators the situation allows. Big indicators wont detect subtle strikes and often spook fish when plopped in the water.

#2 Never put your indicator up on the thick part of your leader. Heavy line doesn't sink as fast and will cause a unnatural drag on your flies as well as keeping the flies above the fish.

#3 When in doubt about mending use "highsticking" in place of the mend. Raise your rod high and follow your nymphs with your rod tip, this will eliminate the need to stack fly line behind your nymphs.

1. Trout have color vision limited to clear, shallow, water and distance less than 12 feet.

2. Trout can discern differences in shades of color, and fluorescent colors are more visible.

3. The color red appears brighter than it does to humans, but quickly becomes black at greater distance.

4. White is best in stained water or water with impurities - other colors less significant.

5. In the low light conditions, trout can not distinguish color. Black, then, becomes the most visible.

Following are a few tips for how to get your wife to let you go fishing. The key here is to treat your wife with care and respect, not just to try to snowball her into letting you go. Also, you can substitute other pastimes for fishing, if that’s what you prefer to do.

Here are the top five resources for trout fishing the Great Smoky Mountains National Park:

1) FISH EARLY AND LATE: Trout feed more in the morning and the evening, especially the big brown trout.   Also, there is less interruption from vacationers.  I have caught trout in Deep Creek in the evening after folks were tubing all day.

3) CHOOSE AREAS CAREFULLY: Two VERY IMPORTANT SPOTS are inlets and outlets because the temperature is vastly different and they are the super highway of food.

4) TRY VARIETIES:  Trout are more apt to gobble down different varieties of food to satisfy the demands of their high metabolism in the summer, so experiment.

1.  Lubricate your knots with water before pulling them tight.  The major cause of knot failure is heat buiild up as a result of friction caused by pulling the knot tight.

2.  Take care to properly seat the knot using a continuous steady pull making sure that the knot is not loose.  Ensure that there a proper amount of line (tag) remaining after the line is trimmed.  Cutting too close will result in a knot pulled loose or a nick in the knot itself.
