Winter Fly Fishing On The Upper Davidson River

Wed, 02/06/2013 - 22:46 -- smaslar

A couple of weeks ago we took advantage of the unbelievable 70 degree January Saturday and headed up to the Davidson River to do a little bit of fishing. We actually went to Brevard, NC on the way, to visit the headquarters for Flymen Fishing Company. We are proud to announce we will soon be offering the innovative fly tying products from Flymen on our website, as soon as we can add them to the store.

After leaving Brevard, we headed into the Pisgah National Forest along US 276, stopping by Avery Creek for a picnic and some fishing. The water seemed a bit high, as we had some appreciable rain previously. We saw no trout in Avery, so we eventually headed up to the Upper Davidson. After the kids played in the creek, I eventually hooked a nice brown trout on a nymph while my son was sitting on my shoulders. I quickly set him on the ground, let him reel the trout in, and grabbed the video camera. By then, it was time to head home, stopping by the hatchery on the Davidson River for a long distance view of the fish tanks and the trout and fishermen (in about a 1:1 ratio).
