Great Olive Winged Drake Dun

Dun:

The Great Olive-Winged Drake duns are of ample size to make a tasty meal for a trout, so we stock them with a size 8 hook. The Olive Winged dun hatch will take place late in the day when overcast or after dark. The dun is an important fly pattern because it is a large dry fly that can be more easily seen and the strike can be more easily seen in the dark or under very dim light. Normally, we would say that a nymh or emerger would have an advantage but that may not be the case with the Great Olive-Winged Drake pattern.

Presentation:

As with the Eastern Green Drake, a down and across presentation cast to some of the better lit areas will serve well. It will allow you to keep track of the fly and resulting hits better. Again, since it will be dark, please be very careful in the water which can be dangerous. If possible avoid wading and fish from the banks. The trout will be wary in the calm water, so wait to see a trout feeding within casting distance. Minimize wadding as it will spook the trout in the calm water.
