The Salmonfly is a giant stonefly found in the Western states and indeed, it provides one of the most famous hatches in the West. Both the adults and nymphs can be up to three inches long and the nymphs live from two to four years providing huge meals for the trout. Indeed, they can be a major part of the trout’s diet. The hatches are abundant and can be found in most of the fast water streams of the West. The Salmonfly hatch starts in the lower elevations and moves upstream at three to five miles per day depending on the weather and water temperature. Anglers who have never fished a Stonefly hatch are missing a spectacular event.

The Salmonflies crawl out on the banks and rocks to hatch into adults mostly during the evenings. Sometimes they will hatch late in the day or early in the morning especially during overcast or rainy day. These large nymphs can be easily found by picking up stones on the bottom. They appear fierce and possible of biting like the hellgrammites, but they do not. The trout are accustomed to feeding on them most anytime during the day or night so the imitation of the nymph is effect almost anytime.

Presentation:

Usually the trout are lying near the banks and are waiting to ambush the nymphs as they crawl out of the water. If the foliage around the stream permits, just walk along the banks and present the nymph fly very close to the bank with very short casts in an upstream direction. Allow the nymph imitation to reach the bank before lifting it off the water. This method makes is easy to cover a lot of water and also prevents the possibility of spooking the trout.

However, if the banks are not accessible, just wade up the middle of the stream and cast to one bank, or better yet, to both banks if possible. Of course, you should keep the fly as near to the bank as possible. Remember the Salmonfly imitation is large, it will take more weight to keep it on the bottom.
