The October Caddis is beautiful, orange and large so it is often referred to as the "Giant Orange Sedge". It can be found from the Pacific Coast to the Rocky Mountains. It is a member of the Limnephilldae family of caddisflies and usually hatches in September and October, hence the name. It lives in the moderate to fast moving water of freestone streams. It emerges in the evenings and the egg laying takes place late in the afternoon to evenings.

The October Caddisflies pupae migrate to the shallow waters as much as a couple of weeks prior to emerging into adults. When they emerge, it will be in the very late afternoons or evenings. Fish the shallow waters around the edges of the fast waters and near the banks. The pupa imitation fly can be effectively used from a period starting up to two weeks prior to the actual hatch and continuing through the hatch.

Presentation:

Start fishing the pupae imitation late in the afternoon and continue to fish it into the evening. The trout will be cruising the edges of the stream and will take the pupae more readily than the adult.
