Sulphur Dun - Nymph

The Sulphur Dun crawler nymphs live in the riffles and runs of the moderate to slow currents typical of the streams with a moderate decline in elevation. They are found in the East and  Mid West areas of the country. Since the Sulphur Dun nymphs are crawler nymphs, they can not hide under rocks and consequently, they are are trout food the entire year. As a result the Perfect Fly Sulphur Dun Nymph is effective all year long.The best time to fish our Sulphur Dun Nymph is just prior to a hatch, when the nymphs are naturally more active and less cautious as well.

Nymph Presentation:

Prior to emerging, the nymphs will move to the nearest water which is suitable to emerge and that will be the slower moving water. Usually, this is just a few feet away. As they began to emerge, they are the most vulnerable to the trout.

Prior to the hatch, fish the fly along the bottom using the correct amount of weight to reach the bottom. Use a strike indicator since it will be more difficult to detect the strike as the fly bumps along the bottom. The fly will definitely be more effective as it bounces along the bottom.

Under normal conditions, an up and across presentation is the presentation of choice. However, if the surface of the water is smooth, use a down and across presentation. This will be more effective since it will be difficult to get close to the trout. The down and across cast will let your drift the Perfect Fly nymph over the trout while he is a safe distance from you. Most of the time, you should use a leader from 8 to 12 feet long and a 5X tippet.
