Winter Fly Fishing On The Upper Davidson River

Wed, 02/06/2013 - 22:46 -- smaslar

A couple of weeks ago we took advantage of the unbelievable 70 degree January Saturday and headed up to the Davidson River to do a little bit of fishing. We actually went to Brevard, NC on the way, to visit the headquarters for Flymen Fishing Company. We are proud to announce we will soon be offering the innovative fly tying products from Flymen on our website, as soon as we can add them to the store.

Preventing Aquatic Invasive Species

Wed, 12/19/2012 - 14:19 -- jmaslar

We here at the Trout University have been aware of and very concerned about the invasion of some of our best trout waters by aquatic invasive species. Aquatic invasive species (AIS) are plants, animals or microbes that create negative impacts on the environment. Impacts from AIS are a danger to everyone, not just by boaters and anglers but anyone who enjoy pristine waters. After the AIS are established in the wild, it is extremely difficult to remove them so it is important to prevent their introduction.

Black Friday Trout Fishing Trip

Fri, 11/30/2012 - 12:57 -- smaslar

Matthew, Tommy, Brian, Dan, and I headed up to the mountains again for our ritual Black Friday trout fishing trip. Many fishermen have already put away their equipment for the colder months, but here at troutu, the only offseason is December, which is ordinarily too busy to go fishing. Typically, the day after Thanksgiving is a great time to get out into the backcountry and hunt for some big brown trout.

Wild and Scenic Rivers - Keeping them Free

Thu, 10/25/2012 - 08:37 -- jmaslar

In my current report from AFFTA (The American Fly Fishing Trade Association) I learned about the efforts of an organization called the American Rivers which is dedicated to preserving and protecting fish habitat. They focus on removing dams that are no longer used for electricity, and protecting the pristine waters like the Merced River by designating them wild and scenic.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Fri, 10/12/2012 - 09:31 -- jmaslar

October is the best time to visit the Great Smoky Mountains national Park as the color is spectacular. I suggest a leisurely motor trip through the loop around Cades Cove in the western part of the park. As srive, stop to visit some of the old homesteads and quaint little churches and cemeteries and reminisce about the "good ol days". In addition to an opportunity to see deer, turkeys and bears and after you reach the end of the cove take a hike on Abrams Creek for a spectacular view Abrams falls.

Delayed Harvest Fly Fishing At Stone Mountain State Park NC

Sat, 10/06/2012 - 22:51 -- smaslar

Three generations of us headed up to Stone Mountain State Park today to hit the well-stocked Delayed Harvest water. Early October is a great time to do this, as the catch and release regulations have just gone into effect, and the stream is chock full of trout (and, sometimes, fishermen).  Also, the weather was outstanding, and Drew was even able to try to catch some of the falling leaves.
